'TfiEfCODRIEk-JOURNAL, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4, 1980 23 A. C. Nielsen, MTUCKY DEATHS TV-rating service founder, 83, dies Associated Press CHICAGO Though nearly 90 percent of his company's business had nothing to do with broadcasting, Arthur C. Nielsen will be remembered as the man who created the audience survey that became an index of success or failure in television programming. Funeral services were planned for today for Nielsen, who died Sunday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at age 83.

Though Nielsen's company always avoided interpretation of its television research, there was agreement within the industry that a one-point advantage in the prime-time ratings in a season could mean as much as $10 million in advertising income to a network. The company's primary business was tracking and reporting the movement of food and drug items in retail stores and, even today, only about 10 percent of the company's revenues are from television research. Nielsen was a philanthropist in education, medical research and programs for the aged and blind. Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; two sons, Arthur C. the company chairman, and Philip, a vice president; three daughters, Margaret Stiegele, Bar-bara Nielsen-Whitcomb, and Virginia Upton; 15 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
