If people can’t imagine a better future that is possible, they’ll hold on to a 'better' past that is fictional. If you live in The Netherlands and care for nature, human rights, animal welfare, and most of all, the future of our children, it is a difficult week.A week where what started 6 months ago materialised in an agreement between the political parties involved. One that promises the illusion of a better past and that prevents the realisation of a better future.A better future that for people can feel too far away, too intangible, too vague, unknown or abstract.Which is why they hold on to what they do know. Hoping to slow down the change. But change won’t wait.It won’t stop.It won’t slow down.It will only go faster. And the best thing we can do is anticipate and try to steer it in the right direction. That asks from us to have a vision of where we want to direct it to.So.Let’s imagine the preferable future ideals and turn them into practical present-day realities.Let’s share the examples, stories and ideas that inspire hope.Let’s build those companies, brands and products that make the difference. And let’s do this together.https://lnkd.in/em3dBA2H.

When nature thrives we thrive. Our health, our communities, our ecosystems AND our economies ALL benefit. It asks a shift in thinking and working. From short-term to long-term.From fragmented to holistic. From value extraction to value creation. From destructive to restorative.Commonland Founder Willem Ferwerda shares his view on the promising business case for a restoration industry.Having worked with Commonland and Wilder Land (in my previous role at ...,staat), and with other regenerative brands, I strongly believe in the importance of growing these successful proofs of regenerative methodologies and business models and getting them into our mainstream culture, as part of our daily lives.Part of our media, our education systems, our retail, our phones, our conversations, our boardrooms and our homes. These proven examples have the power to transform the stories we tell about ourselves, about what is possible. They change how we experience our relationship with nature, with each other. They inspire innovation, inform education and policy. They help long-term, holistic and regenerative ways of thinking and acting to become the norm. Our culture.🙌 to those who turn future ideals into a tangible, inspiring and activating present-day realities. Let's embrace our #relationalreality, create a world build on #cultureofcare, help organisations to become meaningful and make #regenerativebrands successful.

Sustainability is about health.Individual, communal, ecological.“Salutogenesis aims to facilitate the emergence of health atandacross all scales of the whole — in this case the living biosphere we participate in.Salutogenic design, or health-generating design, recognizes the inextricable link between human and planetary health.”

'Markets without meaning are the ruin of our planet.'This research on how boards of hybrid organisations (purpose and profit driven) can govern social and commercial goals successfully by fostering relational leadership makes me think of ‘The coincidence of opposites’, the work of Iain Mcgilcrist on the left and right hemisphere in the brain.‘All things arise from opposing, but in some form nonetheless related, drives or forces. Energy is always characterised by the coming together of apparent opposites …’ Iain McgilcristThe right hemisphere is the master that sees the whole The left hemisphere is the servant that sees the parts. They work together by being apart. They oppose but not contradict. They are both necessary, but unequal in status.“The right hemisphere is the master that sees the wholeThe left hemisphere is the servant that sees the parts. The servants job is to give back the the master what it has found. And that needs to be reintegrated.”(https://lnkd.in/eJx4iDQ3)Let’s imagine purpose as the right hemisphere (the whole) and profit as the left hemisphere (the parts). They are both essential for each other’s existence, but not equal in status.Profits serves purpose. However, it can only do so if they work together effectively in a mutual informing, effective and balanced way (‘look like each other’ to coincide). They need each other, as polar opposites, both to help navigate the world, and to form a world to navigate. Here’s where relational leadership comes in.To represent and protect the collective responsibility of the two, to optimise the dynamics between the two, and to make sure the whole organisation is aligned.“The value of the left hemisphere is power and utility.”“The right hemisphere sees a coherent sustained vision.”From the relationship between the arises meaning.“Science without conscience is the ruin of the soul.”Markets without meaning are the ruin of our planet.#relationalreality

If you want to create change, proof the benefits. Some insightful highlights of a study done by Populytics in the Netherlands on support for (drastic) environment protecting / improving government interventions. Original in dutch.➡ Health is a powerful narrative: While both important, when it comes to pollution, people prioritise protecting their health over improving nature.➡ Tough measures, clear benefits: People do want government to act when it clearly improves health, lowers deaths by pollution and improves nature.➡ People really care: 89% believe protecting health and improving nature are more important than costs and running business as usual for the economy.➡ Fair and proportionate costs: Most people believe those who pollute the most should pay the most.➡ Obligatory over voluntary: People prefer enforced, prohibiting and obligatory regulations and instruments over a voluntary approach.➡ Equal treatment: People believe government interventions should apply to both companies and themselves.

To grow or not to grow. That’s a lot of nuanced specific questions.Helpful piece of growth bringing nuance to the degrowth / decoupling / green growth debate on Aeon.We need to be specific. What, where, for who….“In the end, however, the whole toing and froing about decoupling may itself be a confusing dead end. It anchors us to the abstraction of GDP, to any idea of aggregated and undifferentiated growth and, conversely, it seems to invite an equally abstract environmental metric as a counterpoint. Decoupling A from B. It plays havoc with contextuality.”
