The World Rugby Sevens Series 2023-24 season will conclude with the Madrid Sevens 2024 Grand Final, which gets underway in Spain on Saturday.

The rugby 7s tournament, to be played in Spanish La Liga football club Atletico Madrid’s home ground the Civitas Metropolitano, will see the top eight teams from the regular season compete in the new ‘winner takes all’ Grand Final.

Both the Australian men’s and women’s rugby 7s teams are in contention for the series title and become the inaugural champions. This Grand Final format was introduced in the SVNS starting from the ongoing season.

In a new, exciting format, eight teams will compete in a 'winner takes all' tournament, to determine the eventual champion.

Across four days, the hopeful teams will vie for glory, but who will be the nation to take the title?

The three-day Madrid 7s tournament will also see the bottom four teams from the 2023-24 SVNS battle it out in play-offs against the top four teams from the second-tier World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series to qualify for the 2025 SVNS series.

The schedule was unveiled during an event hosted by Jose Manuel Rodriguez Uribes, President of the Supreme Council for Sports, Spain to officially welcome the HSBC SVNS to Madrid ahead of the three day event at the iconic Civitas Metropolitano Stadium.

There will be more to play for than ever before in the history of international rugby sevens on the pitch, while fans will be treated to a festival of music, food and entertainment around the venue.

The Australian women’s rugby 7s team narrowly missed out on the League title after finishing runners-up to New Zealand in the season proper.

After going toe-to-toe throughout the seven-tournament league stage, the Aussie women heartbreakingly lost to the Kiwis in the Singapore Sevens final earlier this month to concede the League title.

The Tim Walsh-coached Australian women’s rugby sevens team, however, will be bolstered by the return of superstar Charlotte Caslick in the Grand Finals. The Australian women are in Pool B for the Madrid 7s with France, Fiji and Ireland.

The Australian men’s rugby sevens team, meanwhile, made the cut for the Madrid Grand Final after finishing fourth in the regular season standings.

Australia have started Madrid strong with a tough 33-14 win over Ireland.

It was Teagan Levi who got the Aussies off to the perfect start, finishing off a break from the returning Bienne Terita.

Under the new HSBC SVNS 2024 model, seven regular-season events took place, which resulted in Argentina and New Zealand being acclaimed men’s and women’s league winners respectively at HSBC SVNS Singapore in May before the new standalone Grand Final in Madrid.

The top eight men’s and women’s teams based on cumulative SVNS points at the conclusion of the seventh round in Singapore secured their place in the Grand Final.

Fellow returning star Charlotte Caslick then extended the lead with a try before the Irish levelled the scores at the break.

However, the yellow card to Stacey Flood proved pivotal as both teams traded opportunities.

The Australians hit twice with Ireland down to six, with Teagan’s second and Maddison Levi’s 57th and 58th try of the series securing the victory.

Drawn in a tough Pool A with League winners Argentina, France and Great Britain, the Aussie men will look to put on an impressive showing in what will be their final major event before the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Matt Gonzalez and Josh Turner, who missed the Singapore event with injuries, are back in the squad for the final title charge in Madrid.

The action will be intense from start to finish with World Rugby’s new winner takes all Grand Final format featuring only the top eight men’s and women’s teams set to crown the first ever SVNS Champions.

The HSBC SVNS Grand Final pools see men’s 2024 League Winners Argentina in Pool A together with Australia, France and Great Britain. League runners up Ireland are in Pool B alongside 2023 Series winners New Zealand, double Olympic Champions Fiji and South Africa.

Meanwhile in the women’s Grand Final fans can look forward to seeing arch rivals Australia and New Zealand do battle along with the likes of reigning Olympic silver medallists France and Ireland who won the Perth SVNS title in January.

Reigning Olympic and Series champions New Zealand are in Pool A with the USA, Canada and Great Britain, while Australia, France, Fiji and Ireland are in a very competitive looking Pool B.

The newly introduced high-stakes promotion and relegation play-off competition will take place simultaneously in Madrid with teams ranked ninth to twelfth in SVNS 2024 competing with the top four teams from the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger 2024.

Meanwhile the promotion and relegation Play Off competition will see a further eight men’s and women’s teams playing for their HSBC SVNS status as the Qualifier final matches on Sunday are set to provide rugby sevens fans with a feast of excitement, jeopardy and high drama.
