My analysis

Kevin Gausman will be front-and-center for the Toronto Blue Jays in tonight’s series finale as he looks to help his club avoid the sweep against a Boston Red Sox squad that’s heating up with four straight wins and six victories in its last seven outings.

Gausman put up his best start of the season a week and a half ago as he scattered five hits over nine shutout innings against the Athletics. The right-hander took the loss in his last start on June 14 against a pesky Guardians lineup, giving up eight hits and three earned runs over just 5 1/3 innings, but he has been solid over the past couple of months as he’s held opponents to three earned runs or fewer in nine of his last 11 appearances.

The Red Sox will send Brayan Bello to the mound, and the 25-year-old has not fared as well over the last month. Bello has surrendered at least six hits and four earned runs in each of his last three outings while only pitching through the fifth inning once through that span.

He also owns a bloated 6.48 ERA over his last six starts, having allowed at least three earned runs in each of those starts and four or more on four occasions.

Gausman should give Toronto the edge early in the ballgame, and it helps that the Jays have cashed the first five innings moneyline in eight of their last 12 outings.

Gausman is having a down year in terms of strikeouts, averaging exactly one K per inning pitched (75 Ks in 75 innings) after averaging 1.28 per inning last season (237 Ks in 185 innings). However, the Jays starter has seen his strikeout rate climb since the start of May with 52 Ks in 47 innings.

Gausman has recorded at least six punchouts in six of his last eight starts and should get plenty of whiffs against a Red Sox team that ranks third-worst in the majors in strikeouts per game (9.64).
