South Carolina’s Second Chance initiative not only helps create a pathway to employment for returning citizens, it provides employers with a larger pool of skilled workers, as well as hiring incentives, making for a more robust workforce.Graniteville Specialty Fabrics is just one of our many Second Chance success stories. In 2019, the company utilized the Work Opportunity Tax Credit to hire a formerly incarcerated individual, who has since become a valuable member of the team, receiving multiple raises of the last five years of employment. In their own words, the employee is “one of our best performers.” How’s that for a win-win? Learn more about the Second Chance initiative: https://bit.ly/4aAtvQV.

You’ll spend about 80,000 hours working in your career: 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year, for 40 years. So how to spend that time is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make.

Please join us in celebrating June's Shield Spotlight, Sara Blanchfield! 🙌 Follow along as we learn more about Sara and her role here with EcoShield...🔹 When did you join EcoShield & what’s your position/role?I joined EcoShield six and a half years ago as a part-time CSR (customer service representative) in Orange County, California. I knew nothing about pest control and chose the job because it was within walking distance of the room I was renting. I thought I would answer phones for EcoShield for 6 months and then resume college in LA for international relations. Six and a half years later, I now serve as the Director of Customer Care at our national headquarters! 🎉 🔹 What is your favorite part of your job?The people. EcoShield has made me relentlessly hopeful for humanity because I’m just surrounded by epic, loving, principled, wicked talented people every day. Everyone on our team genuinely has a good heart and wants to use something as simple as pest control to make the world a little better. Working hard isn’t hard when you’re surrounded by people you love, people who inspire you. (We couldn't agree more, Sara!) ❤️🔹 What's one thing you would tell someone who was thinking about working at EcoShield?I would have them genuinely self-reflect and ask themselves if serving others is actually something that makes them happy, fills them up. Ultimately that’s what we’re here for, genuinely. I’d also tell them that taking my job at EcoShield 6 years ago was the single most transformative and positive decision of my life. ✨🔹 If you could pick just one, what would your "spirit bug" be?Probably a honeybee because they're hard workers but also love a fresh flower. Same girl, same. 🐝🌼🔹 Who would win in a fight: you or a Blister Beetle?I would run far before a fight ever became necessary so, I guess the Blister Beetle? 😂🔹 What's your secret talent/a fun fact about you?I can read / write 5 languages - English (sometimes 😅), Latin, Spanish, Portuguese and Hebrew, but I can only really speak English / Spanish, with a little bit of Portuguese in my pocket. 🔹 What is one word you would use to describe EcoShield?Family. 🤗

This is the sort of mindset that makes Emily Nakashima such a valuable part of our exec team, which in turn makes our team so strong:> As a new member of a startup executive team, I wanted to bring that mentality to my relationships with my executive team peers. I quickly learned that nobody appreciated the exec team member who got their own house in order and then sat back waiting for everyone else to do the same. Our job is to build an enduring, successful, valuable business, and a healthy, thriving workplace for our employees. If something is standing in the way of that, it doesn’t really matter to me whether that problem is within engineering or not, I’m going to find a way to help out or try to lend my support. The engineering leaders at dev tools companies have the unique ability to bring a useful perspective to every other part of the company. The best ones are able to show up and do so constructively, and then—this is important, and a *huge* reason our eng teams work so effectively cross-functionally—bring what they learn back into engineering, sharing context and challenges they hear about from across the org.
