We came here on the spur of the moment on the recommendation of a friend. We have two dogs and I’m always a bit concerned but we felt at home here the minute we arrived. They are so helpful. If I wanted to be picky I could but on the whole it was a comfortable clean room with a comfortable bed and we had two very tasty meals all for a reasonable price, all,in a beautiful location. Being an ex hotelier I wanted to stay and help because I could see lots of room for improvement which would not cost a lot of money. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this hotel to, someone especially with dogs. Really fell in love with it.

A Lakeland Treasure 6 years ago

We stumbled across Lancrigg whilst searching for somewhere interesting to spend a mid-week break in the Lakedistict. What a find, Lancrigg proved to be, its wonderful location on the road to Easdale Tarn from Grasser, the views from our bedroom window, the interesting menus and friendly and helpful staff made it a perfect match for what were seeking. It will be even better after the January upgrade to improve the heating system. Well done, Lancrigg and thank you for three memorable days.

Fantastic return to Lancrigg 6 years ago

We used to be regular visitors to Lancrigg but have not been for a few years. We were not happy that it was no longer exclusively vegetarian but thought we would give it a go. So glad we did, we had a great stay.
On arrival we noticed the improvements immediately, no longer are you greeted with cold and a damp smell, the place is warm and the staff very welcoming. Sadly we did not get one of the refurbished rooms, but they look great.
The vegetarian food was excellent and the new bar area a welcome addition.
Over the years the hotel had become tired and it is now getting a long needed facelift.
We will be back soon.

We had breakfast and evebibg meals for 3 days and the quality was of the highest standard, we could bicker about the time we had to wait between courses but that would be churlish. I'd recomend the place.

A Really Lovely Relaxing Stay 6 years ago

Oct 2017
We’ve just returned from a lovely trip to Grasmere staying at the Langcrigg. The hotel’s setting is beautiful with mountain views and forestry perfect for accessing a number of walks right on your doorstep. The gardens were well maintained with plenty of areas for sitting and relaxing. They also offer a cosy drawing room with open fire where you can read, take coffee or after dinner drinks, which was warm and inviting. The room we stayed in along with our dog was spacious, clean and quirkily furnished. It had a comfy bed with great views of the mountains, garden and beyond. The hotel is a place where a slow pace of life can be taken and had a calm and relaxing feel to it throughout. Although the hotel had a small number of staff and things could take a little longer everyone was very professional, friendly, polite and keen to help in making our stay a pleasant one. The menu was extensive and provided us with a variety of choices from meat eating to vegan and everywhere in-between and were intrigued to sample a little of everything. The chiefs were knowledgeable about the ingredients sourced and presented us with the most delicious range of dishes nightly. Breakfast was the same offering a wide choice of options all very tasty and made to order. The 3-day stay was all that we wanted from our break and much more we will most definitely revisit the hotel again and soon.

This is the perfect little gem set in beautiful countryside with spectacular views. I contacted the hotel ahead of our stay as we are both vegans, the new chef and manager was extremely accommodating and although there was nothing specific on the menu for he created a 5 course tasting menu for us.
The accommodation was also very comfortable and we will definitely be back in the very near future.

The hotel is in an idyllic peaceful spot away from the "bustle" of Grasmere, though the village is only a 10 minute walk down the hill. Service was very friendly, both at front desk and in the bar, and the food was excellent in the evening and at breakfast. Rooms were comfortable. A nice little gem, tucked away, will definitely return.

Fine dining indeed 6 years ago

We usually struggle to eat 2 courses at most restaurants, so it was with some trepidation that we ordered a 5 course dinner. We need not have worried - portion sizes allowed us to enjoy the entire meal (and that is definitely not a criticism.)
And what a meal it was.
Canapes served with our pre-dinner drinks were tasty as well as unusual (salt and vinegar popcorn, pesto topped arrancini, cucumber topped with cream cheese).
The generously sized amuse-bouche was a delightfully light concoction of pea flavoured Panna cottage, sprinkled with goats cheese.
My husband and I each selected different starters, mains and desserts so we sampled half of the entire vegetarian menu. Each of the dishes was a work of art, both to look at and to consume. The variety of flavours, colours and textures was a constant source of delight.
We will definitely return, and that will give us a dilemma - order the same wonderful dishes again, or try some of the others?
I should definitely mention the young, enthusiastic staff who added greatly to our enjoyment of the meal.

The breakfasts were excellent and the bar meal we had was equally good too. Quite an expensive place to stay but pleasant. However I was disappointed it was not more environmentally friendly.....the meat was not locally sourced and the toilets were filled with a very harsh blue disinfectant. Also spelling mistakes in the guest info book made it seem unprofessional and not worthy of a 5star price tag.

Excellent food and friendly service 7 years ago

We stayed for two nights over a weekend in January, with breakfast and dinner on both days. The dinner is incredible, especially if you are vegan: it isn't often you get a meal with such delicate presentation and flavour. If you have a sweet tooth I recommend the sweet chestnut dish for desert. The ingredients seemed largely seasonal as well, which is especially comforting in the winter. The breakfast was great: try the TLT if you like tofu! We stayed in the azalea suite which was spacious and very comfortable. Good deep hot bath after a day on the fells! It was quiet and peaceful and in fact the only things that woke me were a blackbird and an owl right outside the window. This is a good spot for red squirrels too. The staff were lovely and very friendly. This was our fourth visit but the first since the hotel changed management, and we will definitely be back.

Great food, cold bathroom. 7 years ago

The food was excellent - we are not vegetarians but were very impressed with the variety and flavours. Strangely, the menu that was on the website and in the file in the bedroom bore no resemblance to what was on offer when we got into the restaurant. The four poster bed was beautifully comfortable and it was nice to have the small lounge. The setting is lovely. One problem was that the rooms were cold:there was no heating on and the window was open when we arrived so it took a long while to warm up. The bathroom never got warm and we spent as little time in there as possible . Service in the restaurant was a little slow, a mistake was made with our breakfast order and they forgot the toast. When we asked about two of the walks listed as accessible from the hotel, no one could tell us the route! It would be nice to have small map handouts for guests to take with them. All in all it was a mixed experience and, considering the price, I feel work needs to be done to iron out the issues raised.

Great time but make sure you are a vegetarian and check in before sunset 7 years ago

The location was amazing along with the building, great vegetarian / vegan food. Friendly staff and each room is unique in decor. The walking trails around the hotel are beautiful and easy to access and extremely child friendly. They make great pack lunches if you ask.
On bad side, It wasn't clear that the place would be hard to find after sunset, also check in ends at 10PM after which no one can enter or exit the building and staff are a sleep. We were driving in from Cambridge and the A1 had 6 accidents including a sudden road closer so we were lost for a good 4 hours with the GPS, we didn't think we were going to make it, but thankfully one of the staff members volunteered to stay up until we arrived. Although the food was very tasty, service was EXTREMELY slow, they only have one person who was managing the front desk, taking orders, checking out, making tea, clearing plates and any thing else a guest may need. On both mornings our food took over an hour to be ordered and arrive.

I\'ve found a little haven to escape to 7 years ago

Traveling with an elderly mother who has many health problems and rapidly failing eyesight we had 4 days to see some mountains and get away from doctors. I called the hotel and was put through to Robert the manager. He had a room available that was on the ground floor and promised i wouldn't be disappointed. When i arrived i popped in to make sure there were no steps and that the room was okay, well i could have cried as it was just beautiful. there were no steps all the way on the ground floor, the room had a four poster bed, a large bath and a bay window over looking a stream, mountains and comfortable chairs to sit and watch the world go by. Perfect. The bed was so comfortable, with crisp linen sheets and fresh white towels. Everything smelt of furniture wax and was charming, clean and welcoming.
I didn't realise the food was all vegetarian which at the start worried me as i thought it all nut loaf etc. well no need to worry as the standard of cooking, quality of wine and service of food was second to none.
I plan to return in the winter as Robert has promised me open fires and hot chocolate after walking in the breath taking area that surrounds the hotel.
I loved it that the hotel is down a little country road and at the end of a dead end, so no passing traffic and no noise. As you arrive at the hotel you are met with a wonderful sense of calm and tranquility that money can't buy, for all my hippy friends out there it is a place to meditate, take time out and just be. I have suggested that they should run courses from the hotel, like cookery classes or alternative relaxation classes. But what ever they decide to do with the little conversion of the barn, i am sure it will be with taste and will fit into the main ethos of the hotel. I can't wait to return with my husband for some R&C in the new year. Lets hope we get snowed in so we have to stay longer.

A September weekend at Lancrigg 7 years ago

We stayed at Lancrigg originally in April 2014 and decided it was hightime for a second visit. The owners back then had been looking to sell.

And so in April this year Robert and Katrina took over. Under these circ*mstances one wondered what the results of the changeover might be like.

Well, the whole experience of having stayed for a couple of days does not disappoint in any way. It is like staying in an 18th century country house (which indeed it is) rather than a hotel - and one with an interesting history at that. It is sympathetic to its origins while having modern facilities and comforts. Staying is a delight, where some of the bedrooms, the guests' lounge, the dining room and the gardens in front of the house have superb views across Easedale. The rooms are clean, light and airy with a homely feel.

But it is also open all day so that walkers (one of the footpaths to Helm Crag and Easedale Tarn passes by the front door) can stop for rest and refreshments - a nice touch is the glass urn just inside the front door from which you can help yourself to a refreshing glass of ice-cool water flavoured with chunks of fresh lemon, cucumber and strawberries. Food is also served during the day for guests, walkers and passers-by.

The restaurant is open to residents and non-residents and the tables can be re-arranged to cater for different sized parties.

One of the main attractions for us was, and is, that the menu is exclusively vegetarian. At our last stay some in the party who were not vegetarian nevertheless commented enthusiastically on the interesting range and superb quality and flavour of the dishes on offer.

And on this occasion too the food had the sort of good quality that was also interesting, flavoursome and well presented. I like to eat well presented food, rather than an art work, and this is what you get at Lancrigg.

We enjoyed our second stay so much we have already booked our next visit for the end of April next year. I think that says it all.

This was our fifth stay over a period of 22 years. Lancrigg is idyllic - peaceful, a great location for walks, the food is fantastic and the staff very helpful and friendly.
The new owners have spent money - the hotel and the room we had was really lovely.
Sitting outside in the gardens and sunshine with a beer after a walk in the hills enjoying the wonderful views was heaven.
We love it and look forward to staying again.

Still enchanting 7 years ago

It was strange to return to a place that I had known so well under its former tenants; being so familiar with both its joys and anomalies, I was concerned that changes might spoil its magic. I need not have worried: the enchantment of Lancrigg remains. In many ways the house feels more awake, the fresh paint and stripped wood showing the grain of the place more clearly, though this was startling at first! Fresh decor, new art, freshly planted beds; there is so much energy in all this change, my thoughts were bouncing off in every direction. It has taken a return home and some time to digest it all! Lancrigg is now a much smarter hotel, but I was revealed that it still feels gentle, and I didn’t feel out of place in my tatty walking gear (and on the walking front, I appreciated the appearance of weather information at the front desk).
My room, Whittington, was comfortable, as always, and with smart new cushions. I was pleased to see locally sourced bath products. Since the hat stand that once stood in the room has disappeared, it would be helpful to have some hooks on the back of the door for coats.
The food was fantastic! It was wonderful to find a menu with exciting vegetarian food, which was beautifully flavoured. The food has always been nice at Lancrigg, but this was some of the most delicious vegetarian food I have tasted. I am delighted to read that Lancrigg is committed to remaining 100% vegetarian!
Thank you for a lovely stay.

Lovely but... 7 years ago

The setting of the hotel is idyllic, perfect for walking straight from the front door, the breakfast was delicious, the staff are courteous and helpful, and the dining room and guest room are lovely. The suite we were in, however, although quirky and authentic, was very damp and quite chilly and both the walls and the windows were very wet, which left me quite wheezy during the night. Whilst Lancrigg differentiates itself very nicely from chain hotels, £198 a night felt very expensive to be in a cold, damp room and we were both very glad to get out into the sunshine in the morning. Would definitely go back to eat but not to stay. Would give 3.5 stars if that were possible.

We stayed here 16 years ago and it was just as much fun. The staff was fabulous, the view was spectacular, the food was 5 star. The bathroom was quite tiny and the room, while very large, was oddly arranged. I had to be very careful not to hit my head while walking around. The hotel was recently sold and has a new chef as well. There are rumors that it may not be strictly vegetarian in the future, which would be a shame for us, as it would prevent our stating there again.

The rooms are quaint and need updating, but that doesn't seem to matter. You can forget your woes here and bask in the glorious views. Easy walking from the front door to Easedale Tarn, or stroll up Helm Cragg. The food is vegetarian or vegan and we decided to dine here 4 nights and try food we would never usually eat. As a vegetarian I've always wanted to stay here where as a novelty I can eat anything on the menu without worrying. I wasn't disappointed during our recent 2 night stay. My non-veggie husband came too and was pleasantly surprised how much he enjoyed the food and also our 2 dogs (who sadly didn't get to taste the food because we ate it all!). The hotel is in a wonderful position with great views, the staff are helpful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are comfortable and nicely kept - although I understand they are soon to be refurbished so will be even better. All in all a thoroughly good stay and the best bit is that its a haven away from all the busy tourists in the popular towns. However should you wish Grasmere, Ambleside, Windermere and Bowness are all very easily accessible from here.

A Vegetarian\'s Dream! 7 years ago

Lancrigg had been on our radar for some time and we decided to give it a go even though it was apparent that it has recently changed hands and is being updated.
Our room was a suite and although it was pleasant enough, we had expected more for the cost of £200 per night B&B.
But once we had eaten our evening meal we were hooked! The food was varied, interesting and delicious. I could perhaps suggest that the morning toast could be a little more artisan but that's a minor point.
Also every single member of staff were attentive, went out of their way to help and were so friendly.
We will certainly return - even if we choose a cheaper room next time!
Thanks to everyone at Lancrigg!

We were told it was all due to happen and the Management know what has to be done. The problem is, at the date of writing, there is much to do. Lots of lost opportunities as to the vegan and vegetarian menu and I think many will be as disappointed as we were. The compensation was the excellent view and peaceful location. We stayed in Silver Howe but the decor and furniture did not match our expectations. The Management were very accomodating and I am sure matters will improve. Relaxing stay with great food! 7 years ago

Our 2nd visit to Lancrigg and we were very happy with the accommodation and the food.

We stayed in 'Dickens' this time which was roomy enough to have a small table and chairs by the window to relax with a great view and had an uncluttered bathroom with a whirlpool bath. (Last time we stayed in 'Wordsworth' which was equally pleasant.)

Plenty of choice for us vegans on the (all veggie) menu with some really original and tasty food. I wouldn't have believed a humble cauliflower could be transformed into such a scrumptious dish until I ate it!

We had heard that Lancrigg had just changed hands this year after decades with the same owner and were a little worried that the veggie ethos or quality of food or service might have suffered but were proved very wrong. Looking forward to our next visit!

Staff are very helpful and food is good with a choice of about 6 main meals but 2 of these are pizza which could be reduced to one with a new item added for wider choice. On arrival there was no shower curtain in the room and no shower gel or soap for the bath. A curtain was brought as soon as mentioned but it seems they only provide hand wash and hand cream. Superb visit 8 years ago

We stayed for one night from the 6-7th March. We have previously stayed on two occasions for longer a number of years ago.

Both my partner and I felt that during our recent visit, the hotel, the room, the bathroom, the staff, the standard of the food at breakfast and at dinner where superb. This is one of the best hotels, not just a vegetarian hotel, in the Lake District.

The bedroom and bathroom were very clean and our room had a fantastic whirlpool bath. The bed was very comfortable and the room was warm and well appointed.

The two waiting staff during our stay where friendly, professional, helpful and polite. We have stayed at a number of hotels in the Lake District and beyond and the staff at the Lancrigg have been the best by far.

The food at Diner and Breakfast for a vegan cannot be bettered.

This is a fantastic hotel without comparison.

We took our dog and walked out of the front door and onto the fells wonderful and came back tired to a roaring log fire and drinks. We had pack lunches which were very good and tasty. We enjoyed another great weekend at Lancrigg, a wonderful location in the snow. On the coldest weekend of the winter the heating was challenged but kept us warm, as did the friendliness of the staff. Food was, I think, even better on this stay than last time, really good. Lancrigg is truly characterful place in a great location with a occasional little wrinkles (eg slightly dodgy curtains and some flakey sound on the TV in our room).

A wonderful, relaxing classy hotel in beautiful surroundings. I fully recommend this hotel, absolutely beautiful. We didn't eat at the restaurant as we were out both nights, but the veggie breakfast was good. My only suggestion to the hotel is that the TV in the John Richardson suite is due replacement - but that's just a minor gripe. We will return.

A home from home 8 years ago

Lancrigg has been run by the same family for 30 years, and it shows. Walking in, you are greeted warmly, like a long-lost friend. It is the 'end of the line' up a long drive, and 'far from the madding crowd'. A place to relax and retreat: comfortable surroundings, easy-on-the-eye decor and views to die for. The food is another matter, and this is a non-vegetarian speaking, having been introduced to the establishment by a dear, but late, friend, I continue to patronise the hotel because the food is original, innovative, colourful, filling, and tasty!
Dinner is preceded by a leisurely sojourn in front of the log fire, plied with drinks - mulled wine at this time of year - and tasty tidbits. Three hours grazing over a sumptuous 6-course Christmas feast with interesting table companions, passes in no time. At other times of the year, the meals vary regularly always with plenty of choice, and no special request is too much trouble. They aim to please! You should try it out; if you do, like me, you will find yourself coming back for more, time and time again.
You won't be disappointed.

Our stay at Lancrigg 8 years ago

Peaceful, freed of traffic blight and sheltered within mature woodland, this gem of a place was defined long ago by Dickens, Coleridge, Wordsworth and others. As a photographer I am surrounded by the Nation's most sublime landscape opportunities. As a cyclist and runner the terrain is challenging, within beautiful, accessible and remote wilderness. As a walker the opportunities are near endless, remaining engaging and diverse within frequently changing topography. As a vegan, Lancrigg's chef rises keenly to the challenge, matching expectations of even omnivores with tasty, plant based wholefoods. Practically unique, this place has been expertly crafted over many years, now is my chosen haven, prizing solace above the turbulence of modern life.

Lancrigg Peace and tranquility ! 9 years ago

So this being the Lake District , we were very fortunate with weather . warm sun and blue skies. This made the grounds of the hotel and the valley they lie in look particularly gorgeous. it is the most peaceful and tranquil location we have ever stayed in , only really birdsong to keep you company. The hotel is delightful and the staff very friendly and helpful. The vegetarian food was delicious varied and very filling. if you want a trouser press a mini bar , Marriot points and need to check your emails very 2 minutes then this is not for you ! if however you want to escape and enjoy the peaceful surroundings ,relaxed atmosphere and some quiet time then it is a gem. Parts of the hotel are very old ,but that brings character. It has an eclectic almost bohemian feel with the room contents and decoration but that all adds to the charm. if you like wildlife then you are in luck. they also appreciate the peace and calm . We saw deer in the meadow next to the garden and a grass snake on one of the garden paths. I can honestly say that the photos on the hotel website do not do justice to the beauty of the views and surroundings. Finally don't be worried about Tofu chewing carrot snacking vegetarian warriors ! It is a place for nice friendly people . I ate a delicious pork pie I bought in Grasmere in our bedroom and no alarms went off !!

I read the reviews for Lancrigg on Trip Advisor. Most are excellent but the odd one complains about staff, decor and service. If like me, this makes you procrastinate, I will explain. Sure, the staff take their time over dinner (the kind of place it is, it would be upsetting if they didn't), but I found them 100% friendly and helpful. Sure the bedroom furnishings are a bit 'old school' (it's very much a minor, personal taste matter- I'm happy it wasn't IKEA), but the place made us feel really comfortable and relaxed and I doubt anyone would be scathing about the communal areas. In fact I was in complete awe. The setting is beyond beautiful and provides easy access to the best of the Lakes walks- Helm Cragg and Easdale Tarn (google image them). The veggie food is good and the history of the house and ajoining forest is magical. We had dinner with a cat and a red squirrel. I loved it. The bad reviwers must be lunatics.

Our Wordsworth room was tastefully fitted out, quirky bathroom taps and views of Wordsworth's daffodils and mountains beyond. The windows were drafty but you wouldn't want them double glazed.
I would say that the usual price per night is expensive, but I guess you are paying for the location as much as for the hotel amenities. We did get a small last minute reduction.

My first trip to the The Lake District and I found out about Lancrigg by chance via the internet. The weekend was also a special birthday treat for my youngest teenage daughter who is also a vegetarian. The staff at Lancrigg are very friendly and accommodating and the food was a delight. I'm not a vegetarian so it made a nice change in not having to pick meat or fish on the menu. We stayed in the Silver Howe room with a put-me-up bed for one of my daughters and there was still plenty of room for a two night stay. The location is stunning and the amount of local walking trails on the doorstep made it very easy for a first time visitor like myself to confidently explore with no knowledge of the area. Grasmere is a delightful village and I have to admit my daughters and I came away feeling like we'd been away for a lot longer than 2 nights which says a lot about Lancrigg, their staff and the idyllic location.

Great weekend 9 years ago

Very pleasant stay in a fascinating and historically interesting old country house. We are not vegetarians but both enjoyed the food. Try the vegetarian fish and chips with your eyes closed and you would be hard pushed to say it wasn't fish. The setting is ideal, Helm Crag is on your doorstep and we walked over to Langdale and back to Easdale Tarn without using the car all weekend.
Downsides are that the Wi Fi hardly worked, the TV reception was so bad it was unwatchable and there was a problem with the hot water.
However it is a mark of how good our stay was that this barely dampened our stay and we would both thoroughly recommend Lancrigg to anyone interested in either the Lakes or walking or both.

An excellent place to get away from it all 9 years ago

A very friendly and welcoming hotel. We had called in on several occasions while walking in the area previously and enjoyed tea and cake. Not being vegetarians we were somewhat apprehensive about an exclusively meat free menu, but we needn't have worried! The food was very good and we particularly enjoyed the variety on offer at breakfast.
Room was very comfortable and clean. The dining room and lounge are characterful and comfortale. A very peacful rural retreat. We will visit again.

The perfect New Year 9 years ago

We stayed 4 nights including New Year. We have been visiting Lancrigg for many years. It is a beautiful and comfortable hotel in a stunning location just below Helm Crag with views across towards Easedale Tarn and Silver Howe. This time we were in the cosy Whittington room and we could look from the bed right across the valley. The meals, as always, were excellent and the special buffet and 6 course dinner on New Year's Day were the most delicious vegan feasts imaginable. The proprietors' family entertained us with a challenging quiz on New Year's Eve, culminating with champagne and Auld Lang Syne. Margaret & Stephen

Love this place! 9 years ago

Have just spent 2 nights at Lancrigg and had such a lovely time. The hotel is so cosy and comfortable and the staff are really welcoming, helpful and gay-friendly. We had stayed here before and returned for a post-Christmas treat. We love the location as it's perfect for walking and the scenery is stunning. We had dinner both nights and the food was delicious - I am gluten and dairy-free as well as vegetarian and eating out is normally difficult but not at Lancrigg, where I had loads of choice. Breakfasts were also really tasty with gluten-free bread available as well as all the naturally gluten-free options. A really nice touch is the complimentary tea and coffee when you arrive (on top of the tea and coffee-making facilities in the room) and the quality, cruelty free and natural-ingredients toiletries. We stayed in the Wainwright suite, which is over 2 floors - this was perfect for us as our dogs slept in the downstairs area and we had the cosy bedroom with the four-poster bed to ourselves! This place is very special and we are already saving up for our next visit.

Wonderful Christmas! 9 years ago

We've just returned from spending a wonderful Christmas at Lancrigg.
We stayed in the Silver Howe room which had beautiful views over the mountains and was very comfortable.
The atmosphere was very relaxed, friendly and homely and the staff were very welcoming.
The location cannot be bettered - one direction straight to the mountains and a beautiful valley and the other a ten min walk into the centre of Grasmere.
The food was amazing. We are vegans and , of course, this is where Lancrigg excels as it specifically caters for vegetarians, vegans and those with special dietary needs such as gluten free. Usually we end up rowing with hotel managers as they invariably say they can cater but haven't a clue ( ie recently we were fed shredded carrot and cabbage with various additions such as walnuts, pomegranate and various sauces Eight weeks in a row at a business networking event!! We also start to resemble a fruit salad for pud too! ) Here though, even normally meat eating partners of other guests were impressed with the enormous imaginative buffets, vast breakfasts and seven course Christmas lunch. We think we put on about a stone!
Will definitely return next Christmas and during the year too

The description of the hotel is accurate. The location, atmosphere and staff service are all superb. The food is excellent and the guest lounge and dining room are lovely. Everything is very clean and well presented. The only minor issues (based on the room we had) are the in the need for some attention to decor, to bring the standard up to what one might expect for this type of hotel (small paint and wallpaper areas for example).
Why not visit Lancrigg for afternoon tea or evening meal as a taster of the place and of the excellent vegetarian food.

A special place to stay 9 years ago

We first visited Lancrigg in the 1980s, not long after it was opened as a Vegetarian Country House Hotel. It is still under the same stewardship as it was then (much to our approval). For us, Lancrigg is special. The location offers fabulous views; the place is far enough outside the centre of Grasmere to be peaceful, yet it's only a 15-20 minute walk into the village centre. Inspiring walks onto the fells can be done from Lancrigg itself, without the need to travel elsewhere. The food is truly superb and also imaginatively prepared. For vegetarian or vegans, it's a rare jewel. Admittedly, this place might not suit everyone - there no hint of the bland corporatism that is so common nowadays. The wi-fi is not great and the television in our room had a few reliability problems. But maybe that's not a bad thing. After all, those things should not be a high priority when visiting such a magnificent part of the world. It's certainly a highly individual, characterful place, managed by delightful and very helpful people. Possibly some may find it slightly quirky compared to other places, but for a relaxing few days in unrivalled surroundings, with excellent food and at a very reasonable price, it's at the top of our list.

Pure relaxation 9 years ago

From the moment you arrive you feel like you are being welcomed into someone's home and as you sip your coffee on the terrace in the sunshine you're glad you returned.
Having left the four kids at home with the grandparents it's great to just completely unwind and there's no better place to do it. Some people may not like the fact that you might have to go and ring the bell to get someone's attention in the middle of the day, but I much prefer that to attentive staff hovering!
After a busy day walking you enter the comfortable lounge, where some dress for dinner and others (me) go in their socks. It takes a couple of days to realise that it's not really possible to consume all the courses without feeling a bit full, although it could be the amount of organic beer or wine you had with it that may have been the problem.
Then to bed for a quiet night's sleep in readiness for more food to be consumed at breakfast.
Have stayed here occasionally over the last 16 years, with and without children and, although we have other holidays, these are the best for recharging the batteries.

This was my umpteenth stay at Lancrigg
I stayed in KittyCragg which is always great value for money as you have access to a the hotel facilities
As usual, it was really comfortable (the beds are sumptuous), friendly & totally relaxing.
I am vegan so the food is fantastic but a meat eating friend who came for a few days reckoned the food was unusual & satisfying.
My husband joined me for the last few days & also loved returning
If you are thinking of trying trying hotel, DO IT NOW as it may change hands :-)

Idiosyncratic comfort 10 years ago

Lancrigg offers all the idiosyncratic and faintly odd pleasures of a Victorian retreat in the Lake District -- bow windows, lace curtains, chandeliers, pot-plants, fires, miscellaneous framed watercolours and embroideries -- combined with all that is needful for the modern weary -- bookcases, sofas, games, massage, tea, good food and wine, and above all, profound peace and quiet. The views are spectacular, the walking is excellent, and the grounds are romantic, extensive, and packed with literary association. The staff will give you a flask of tea and a packed lunch for your day out, discuss maps, walks, and your nutritional needs. Other guests are typically blessedly quiet and discreet. The only thing I wanted extra was a hotwater bottle to fill up myself -- and only because I was exhausted with travelling. Take a swimsuit if you want to take advantage of their arrangement with the local spa.

Lovely hotel in a fantastic location. My wife and I stayed for evening meal plus bed and breakfast and had wonderful meals throughout our stay.

All the staff were fantastic, very friendly and helpful, couldn't ask for better.

This is a great old house and must take a considerable amount of funds to maintain and this is reflected in the fact that it is not fitted out with the most up to date furnishings and equipment. Showers are a little under powered, TV with only a few channels, but wowser with a view like we had outside our bedroom window who cares.

It has a very cosy atmosphere totally in fitting with the history of the building and location but if you are staying please take into account that this is not Claridges and that the owners are are managing to keep a fine building going under what I suspect are difficult economic times so give it and them some allowances when staying and you will be well rewarded.

A complete joy. 10 years ago

We had the Wainwright suite which suited our desire for occasional solitude and found the guest lounge to be perfect for light chat and seemingly endless cups of tea - on which note it was a delight not to have to resort to our own stock, as at most hotels.
The food alone was worth the cost of our stay - being fussy (about the quality and blending of ingredients) and not desiring the auto-condimendation of dishes means that most eateries fall far below what we would be prepared to eat at home but Lancrigg served not a dull morsel over the four days of our stay.
The setting is ideal, the staff intelligently intervene only when desirable and the building is a grand example of a quirky and characterful older property.
We will certainly return.

A very pleasant stay 10 years ago

Although an historic building, it has been tastefully modernised with all the conveniences one would expect (though in our room (“Easedale”), one needed a certain agility to use the bath/shower!)
The location is superb, in the quiet side valley of Easedale. For hillwalkers, it has the attraction that one can enjoy many excellent excursions without the chore of driving and then finding somewhere to park; Helm Crag, Steel Fell, the Langdale Pikes and even Helvellyn are all within reach on foot.
I must, of course, mention the food. Although my wife and I are not vegetarians, we do often eat such meals at home, so it was very interesting and satisfying to try the menu here. We sampled a fair range during our three day stay and found it all delicious, varied and beautifully presented. We never noticed the absence of meat!

The pleasure of our stay was greatly enhanced by the enthusiastic and very helpful staff – nothing was too much trouble for them.

One slight drawback, for a fellwalker, is the lack of a drying room (even the humble youth hostel down the road possesses such a facility). On one occasion, a helpful young lady took some wet trousers of mine to the tumble drier, but this would not really be practicable if a large number of guests had got thoroughly soaked on the fells, especially for their rucksacks and boots.

Overall, though, we feel it would be well worth staying there again.

Great food, comfy rooms, and amazing setting 10 years ago

We stayed at Lancrigg at the first leg of a road trip up to the Hebrides and back to London. It was some of the best food we had the whole trip, including the veggie food in London, and Lancrigg's gluten free bread was some of the best I've ever had. The rooms were cozy with beautiful pastoral views and very comfortable beds (only downside being the weak water pressure in the showers that made showering difficult, but the unique charm of the place certainly outweighs this minor inconvenience). The views are gorgeous from inside and out, and you can eat outside at tables overlooking the emerald lawn and hilly pastures beyond. The hotel grounds of ferny woods, ancient moss covered rock walls, and quiet ponds along with the adjacent National Trust land made for an excellent evening walk full of discovery and a vigorous morning run up the amazing dry-laid stone staircase to the crag that overlooks the valley. We would definitely stay here again. It would make a great place to relax over a few days, hike about, and enjoy being well fed.

We have been to the Lancrigg in all seasons, each offering a different experience, but all equally amazing with memorable views in a tranquil location hidden away in a quieter part of the Lake District. Only a 10 minute walk takes you into what in my opinion is the prettiest village in the Lakes, Grasmere and somewhat less busy with unique shops and cafes filled with charm and local characters...
When life is hectic, we pause, think a while and always come to the same conclusion.. we need look no further than a few days at the Lancrigg. As you enter the drive leading up to the charming property, deer can often be seen only a couple of meters away, the large old trees, and rolling river enchant you and before you know it, the stress of modern day life has vanished.

I have pasted in below the review I have just submitted to Tripadvisor:

Although we are relatively frequent travelers, this is the first time I have felt that I really wanted to submit a review to Tripadvisor. But this hotel deserves it.

Do not expect a glitzy modern hotel. Instead, a stay here feels more like a visit to a friend's country house with all the quirks and individuality that implies. As such the service is informal, but the staff try really hard to please and they succeed.

As a vegetarian hotel, the food is, of course, an essential part of what the establishment has to offer. In my opinion the food is outstanding, the attention to detail is obvious and the choice is large.

Finally, the setting is magnificent.

The location of the hotel is perfect for us, with stunning scenery from all views and walks straight from the door for all members of our extended family who will often join us during our stays.
The food is excellent as is the service provided, the only frustration is not having the time to try everything on the menu.
The rooms are full of character and have a real 'country house' feel. If you are looking for a soulless Travelodge type room, then Lancrigg may not be for you. And don't be put off by it's formal looking outward appearance, you will be made to feel extremely welcome by its owners and at ease wondering around the beautiful grounds and relaxing having a drink in the lounge.
We look forward to our next visit.

Loved our stay here - we came up for our 1 year wedding anniversary and couldn't have asked for a more lovely hotel and location. The view from our room (Whittington) was lush - mountains huge fields of grass. The bed was amazingly comfortable (my hubby is VERY picky and slept like a baby for the 3 nights we were there.

The food was lovely - it's a big bonus to actually have choice as vegetarians! I had the veggie fish and chips twice it was so good.

The staff were friendly and really made you feel at home.

All in all, loved it and would happily stay there again!

Very good stay, very comfortable, staff friendly. Whilst I like a hotel not to have notices everywhere, it would have been helpful to know what time breakfast was, or which button on the phone in the room was for reception etc. The evening meal can be quite painfully slow in being served, after a day on the fells we are starving! perhaps a few healthy nibbles while we wait could help here. On (only) one night I put my name down for 7pm meal, and it was 7.20 when someone came to take my order, they were lucky not to find a skeleton at the table! I will be coming again as the hotel and its situation suit me very well.

Warm, relaxed atmosphere in great location, lovely meals, friendly staff - we'll be back, hopefully! However, two little suggestions, if we may:
(a) more choice of fruit juice (eg grapefruit/apple) would be welcome at breakfast-time as well as the usual orange juice. Perhaps porridge could also be added to menu for cold 'summer' mornings?!
(b) Bedroom was very comfortable, but bathroom would benefit from better ventilation.

Lancrigg is our favourite hotel in the world because it offers a friendly, personal service in a fantastic location with first class food. All the rooms are individual and full of character, and there are numerous superb walks from the hotel doorstep. A completely relaxing break is assured when there is never any concern about the quality of the food or its preparation, and there is always a good range of intriguing choices on the menu; there is a great list of wines and beers to work through, and the environment is one of the most beautiful anywhere and feels marvellously detached from the tribulations of the modern world. The staff are friendly and without apparent effort create an over-riding atmosphere of calm and well being that makes staying at Lancrigg such a great pleasure. Idyllic location 11 years ago

Having been told of Lancrigg by friends, then finding further details on the internet, there was very little stopping my vegan partner and I from booking to stay here for our weekend getaway in the Lake District.
The phone reservation was handled swiftly and efficient, but a new computer system led to me having to chase up the booking confirmation a couple of times.
Arriving at Lancrigg was easy (Sat Nav definitely helped in the dark!) and the hotel is beautiful. Although we arrived much later than expected, the welcome was still very warm and friendly. Everything was explained and we were shown to our room (Azalea). The room was spotless, spacious and had everything we were looking for.
The grounds and view from the hotel and our room were magnificent and we were able to grab a bite to eat at a reasonably late hour, which was very much appreciated. The location is spectacular and one of the main reasons we chose here for a 2-night retreat away from it all. A short walk from Grasmere and a short drive to Ambleside and Windermere is an ideal position and base for wandering around the fabulous countryside.
The food was excellent throughout our stay here and the choice of food and wines was very good.
The staff were all very attentive, polite, helpful and respectful. The only slight niggle we had was that being the only couple the presumed-Manager/Owner gentleman ignored in the dining room one evening was rather rude and unnecessary!
However, we would definitely stay here again and would have no hesitation in recommending Lancrigg VCHH to anyone.
A huge 'Thank you' to all other members staff, particularly the Estonian blonde-haired female (whose name I didn't catch) who was very helpful throughout.
It's well worth staying here, moreso if you're vegetarian or vegan.

An Anniversary to remember 11 years ago

My wife and I just returned from Lancrigg for a 3 night getaway to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary. We're both vegan, both nature lovers, and found Lancrigg by accident online.

We're both very glad we went.

The room was lovely (The Whittington) with small windows but a nice view of the front lawn (where we would find wild rabbits at play each morning) and the beautiful landscape beyond.

The staff were great - friendly and helpful, always on hand when we needed them, but invisible when we didn't (the perfect blend for us).

And the food...The Lancrigg has a very talented chef whose food has to be sampled. Mushroom roulade was a particular favourite of ours. Even in this day and age, as vegans it is rare to eat out and be able to order a multitude of fine foods from the menu. Our taste buds and stomachs were spoiled rotten during our short stay.

Add to that the lovely walks and climbs nearby, it was the perfect weekend. Our thanks extend to everyone at Lancrigg, both visible and behind the scenes, and we shall return.

Beautiful Views, Delicious Food! 11 years ago

We really enjoyed our restful three night stay at Lancrigg and will definitely come again! We arrived in snow, quickly followed by sunny weather which created a really beautiful landscape to walk in - though very soggy underfoot! After a wonderful breakfast, it was great to be able to walk directly from the hotel and quickly feel surrounded by the hills. We also unexpectedly saw a wild roe deer roaming the hotel woods. We particularly loved having these views from the bay window in our room - The John Richardson Room (lower floor room with its own private external door - so useful).
The room was very spacious and therefore needing an extra heater and blankets - which we were happily given - but then it was February with snow! The roll top bath gave plenty of hot water, quickly filling the bath and the connecting shower had good pressure . A lovely addition were the locally handmade, chemical free toiletries that were provided. Also within the room, were tea making facilities with a range of teas and coffee, refreshed daily.
The restaurant food was excellent (delicious and well presented) with a variety of choices with each course.
The lounge, with the log fire, was extremely cosy and a pleasant place to sit and meet other guests.
The staff were all friendly and helpful making us feel very welcome throughout - thank you.

Cosy Christmas 11 years ago

We drove through clouds of mist and heavy rain to reach the Lake District, commenting that thank goodness we had been before as we were obviously not going to have any scenery to view, then as if by magic the clouds lifted just after Penrith and the mountains soared into sight. The hotel must give credit to its setting for its life-enhancing qualities, but what it has over other hotels in the area is its atmosphere. You feel like you are a guest in a beautiful Victorian country house that just happens to be vegetarian, thus giving more choice than non-carnivores usually avail of. The real fire in the sitting room added to the atmosphere and I found the other guests friendlier than strangers sometimes are in other hotels. Was this the result of the ambience/Christmas spirit? Our room the Darwin was pleasant enough,we managed to have a sneak look at others before leaving and found you got what you paid for - the dearer rooms were much bigger with better views and some of the cheaper rooms were quite small. Darwin was fine. The staff were friendly, accommodating and eager to please and we felt well looked after.

We now tend to go for short breaks as the quantity of food for us is too much, but what a chioce. I admit I am not a Vegetarian but really enjoy all the Vegetarian choices at Lancrigg and I love to see my wife, a "Veggie" have so many options.

The Hotel is "Old" and for us has a certain charm, since our last visit the bathroom in our usual room has been upgraded, a differant bed but the charm remains.

If you want a modern "Boutique" rooms go elsewhere but for a cosy break with log fires and comfortable settes in the lounge thid is the place.

Staff friendly and attentive , room cleaned to an excellent standard.

We enjoyed it again, and we ate some wonderful food.I have looked on other review pages and feel some people who have posted, especially one, who says do not stay in the Whittington room are on a differantn plant. Phone the Hotel ask about the rooms and choose one that suits you. While checking out one of the staff went to great lenghths to explain the rooms available.

SO JUST ASK,SAY WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE, and as far as we are concerned you will get it if humanly possible!!!!

My wife and I came here to celebrate our First wedding anniversary. We found the standard of accommodation very much to our liking, it was comfortable, the staff were friendly and the food was of an excellent standard. The setting in a peaceful valley is idyllic and make it aperfect place to come and unwind as well as enjoy walks in the stunning landscape. I highly recomend it to vegetarians and non vegetarians alike!

Gorgeous 11 years ago

This is a gorgeous place. Lovely building, gorgeous grounds, breathtaking views, amazing food. My room (The Nightingale) was small, yet perfectly formed. Perhaps the windows need attending to as it was a bit draughty, but I like fresh air, so no problem for me! Staff were friendly and caring, without being 'in your face', which suits me fine. Thanks.

Great stay! 11 years ago

Mt son and I recently stayed at Lancrigg and had a wonderful time! It was my first visit for many years and it was as good as I remembered. Our rooms were comfortable with great views and the food was excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful. As vegetarians it was such a treat to be able to choose anything off the menu without having to check ingredients. Will definitely visit again and would recommend.

The food was excellent and the room very comfrotable with stunning views and wonderful walks from the door. A very peaceful location. There was a very large cobweb in the room - otherwise everything was spot on and we hope to return.

Great break and great food 11 years ago

We had a really lovely time at Lancrigg. The food was super, my wife is a vegitarian and was so happy to be able to select any item on a very good menu. I am not a vegitarian but truly loved the food and looked forward to each meal with real anticipation.
We will certainly return, I should say how much we enjoyed the walk to the Tarn from the hotel, great stuff....

Perfect Spot for Vegetarians 11 years ago

Lancrigg Country House is a lovely building in one of the most beautiful spots in the country. Enjoying commanding views over Easedale, the hotel sits in the shadow of Helm Crag and the famous Lion and Lamb outcrops. It is a 10 minute walk from the centre of Grasmere with its fabulous coffee shops and world famous Gingerbread shop.

The hotel is full of character and charm and our room, the Franllin, was furnished with an extremely comfortable double bed. The ensuite had a luxurious full-sized bath and the toiletries, supplied by Pure Lakes, were gorgeous. My only minor criticism is that the decor is slightly tired and in need of a refresh.

The real star of the show is the restaurant. Staffing is lean though they were swift and attentive. The menu is fantastic and the food quite superb. Vegans and lactos alike will be spoiled for choice and we definitely had our best meal out for years.

We will definitely be back - soon I hope.

We had a great time staying at the Lancrigg Hotel. We loved our room in the Annex, and our cups of tea in the garden. We also really enjoyed the walk through the woods to breakfast each morning - it made our stay just that little bit more special.

My wife and I had a most enjoyable stay at Lancrigg and wish we could have stayed longer this time. We found the experience very relaxing and comfortable. Unlike my wife I am not a vegetarian, but was most impressed with the standard and presentation, quality and taste of the food. The service was excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful. We will certainly come back soon.
