Registration Coordinator

The Registration Coordinator is responsible for managing the registration process for all Education Department programs and events, and plays a pivotal role in ensuring the quality, accuracy, and consistency of Mote Education’s digital content. Working Hours

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in business, marketing, or related field or equivalent work experience

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace and experience with registration

Ecotoxicology Analytical Chemist

The Ecotoxicology Program at Mote Marine Laboratory is seeking an analytical chemist to join a diverse team of scientists investigating synergistic effects on marine life from exposure to multiple stressors, including natural biotoxins (HABs), toxic organic pollutants (pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other endocrine disrupting compounds) in association with natural and anthropogenic stressors, including climate change. Current projects address investigations into the source, fate and effects of toxic substances in the coastal marine environment, including coral reef communities. These studies include trophic transfer, bioaccumulation and persistence of natural biotoxins as well as anthropogenic contaminants in water, air and marine organisms. The chemist will participate in the design and testing of innovative technologies for controlled lab tests and in situ detection of toxic substances, working with colleagues and stakeholders to assess and reduce risk to marine life and public health.

Housing

Marketing Coordinator

This is a full-time position within the Community Relations & Communications department of Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. The Marketing Coordinator supports the department’s activities for Mote divisions and programs and the institutional goals of: 1) promoting Mote as a world-class marine research institution, 2) generating attendance for Mote Aquarium and Mote Education programs and events; and 3) supporting Mote’s fundraising efforts. Primary focuses of this position include:

  • Social Media Coordination: This position will work with the Marketing & Public Relations Manager to regularly and consistently execute social media best practices across all of Mote’s social platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter and LinkedIn). Postdoctoral Researcher in Marine Sediment Science

Position: Karenia brevis. The applicant will study groundwater seepage where limestone aquifer strata intersect the southwest Florida shelf, either diffuse or via karst features, and how this may contribute to the marine nitrogen cycle, especially in regard to the role of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium in benthic sediment. This research will build on the previous findings of Mote scientists working in this area. The research scientist will be expected to complete the proposed research involving field sediment and water collections and laboratory experiments, develop collaborations with other internal and external scientists, and publish research. This position will benefit from experience in enzyme-mediated nitrogen chemistry, ability to work with large datasets, and a strong background in experimental design and statistical analysis. Training in scientific scuba diving is desirable but not mandatory. The incumbent will be mentored by the manager of the Chemical and Physical Ecology and Ocean Acidification Programs, Dr. Emily Hall, and will receive additional mentoring from both internal and external scientists.

The Mote research enterprise has over 25 diverse research programs, an array of STEM education/outreach programs, and an aquarium featuring working laboratories with more than 100 marine species. Mote currently has more than 40 PhD-level scientists, nearly 300 staff and approximately 1300 volunteers located on its main campus in Sarasota and across seven additional campuses/facilities, including a state- of-the-art 200-acre marine and freshwater aquaculture research park, and a 19,000 square foot International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration in the Florida Keys. Work on a new 110,000 square foot Mote Science Education Aquarium is nearing completion.

Harmful Algal Bloom/Seagrass Technician

Mote Marine Laboratory seeks a Technician to operate and manage a harmful algal bloom (HAB) culture lab as part of the Florida Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative and US HAB Control Technologies Incubator programs. The incumbent shall prepare/maintain cultures of Karenia brevis and conduct/assist laboratory and field experiments as well as facilities operations on novel mitigation products, expand culture lab capabilities including conducting/developing innovative culturing of other HABs for mitigation testing. A qualified candidate should have a related science background, knowledge of experimental lab equipment and facilities, water quality sampling/monitoring experience, be willing and able to prepare for and clean up after tabletop lab and large tank testing, and have an understanding of HAB mitigation and control techniques. This individual should be able to work independently to meet culture and experimental design goals, must have strong organization skills, and be a good communicator. This position will report to the Research Laboratory Manager and the primary place of employment is located at the Mote Aquaculture Park at 12300 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, FL 34240.

Requirements:

  1. Valid Driver’s License.
  2. Degree in a related field is required.
  3. Knowledge of experimental lab and tank systems.
  4. Familiar with standard computer software.
  5. The ability to work productively individually or in a group setting with scientists.

Special Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of Karenia brevis and/or other HAB culturing is preferred.
  2. Knowledge of Florida marine ecosystems, including seagrass.
  3. Previous laboratory and experimental tank systems experience.
  4. Microscopy/Flow Imaging Microscopy skills.
  5. Familiar with marine organism experimental testing equipment (monitoring probes, temperature probes, tanks, pumps, filters, heaters, etc.).
  6. Strong troubleshooting skills.
  7. Ability to work independently and stay organized.
  8. Good teamwork and communication skills.
  9. Physically able to lift 50 pounds and remain standing/walking for multiple hours a day.

Duties:

  1. Grow cultures in quantities ranging from 1-1,000 liters of various HAB species. (50%)
  2. Maintain a clean and operational lab. (10%)
  3. Assist Red Tide Initiative staff and partners with project preparation, experimental design, and facility operations as needed. (25%)
  4. Assist the Seagrass Ecosystem Research & Restoration Program with greenhouse facility operations. (15%)

Building Operations Lead

This position requires advanced understanding of software to monitor building systems operations and ensure proper functionality at all times. The operations lead must be able to master complex computer programs and databases, keep up with a continuous but often uneven workload, provide exceptional customer service, work well with staff, volunteers, and interns and be able to coordinate with various other departments. The operations lead position requires forward thinking to elevate building component performance with the ultimate goal of providing a safe and functional environment for staff, volunteers, guests and animals.
