Thrilled to partner with the good folks at NACADA, The Global Community for Academic Advising, as part of a broader effort to support Cal State institutions through a comprehensive, standards-based assessment process to promote excellence in academic advising (EAA).As an EAA Fellow who is a product of California’s higher education system, it is extremely gratifying to support the efforts of these forward-thinking, student-centered colleagues through this transformative process. The goal is to systematically examine, clarify, and build upon promising practices so that more students can achieve their educational goals and attain postgraduate success. During my time at SUNY New Paltz, as part of the inaugural EAA cohort, we found the comprehensive EAA self-study and the targeted recommendations that came out of this evidence- and standards-based process to be invaluable. Half the fun for me this time around is the opportunity to work with and learn from (and yes, laugh alongside) luminaries in the field such as Susan Campbell, George Steele, Kathy Stockwell, Wendy Troxel, and Sean Bridgen. “NACADA’s Excellence in Academic Advising Process establishes the aspirational standards for colleges and universities to evaluate and improve academic advising. These standards, or “Nine Conditions of Excellence in Advising,” acknowledge the role of academic advising in promoting student learning, success, and completion within the complex context of higher education and organizational change.” Follow the link to learn more about EAA: https://lnkd.in/ed6_PFXh#academicadvising #studentsuccess #advisingasteaching #deib #systematicreview #continuousimprovement #upwardmobility #capacitybuilding Jammie Wilbanks

ARE UNIVERSITIES STILL TIMELY?Provocative question: what is nowadays - with the exception of practicals - the added value of physical #universities as opposed to #online #learning and online discussion groups. Aren’t online universities not much more democratic, allowing even people in third world countries to benefit from higher #education. And do we really need in one country 50 different universities with 50 different lecturers giving 50 different lectures on the same topic?

How did you prepare for your first role as a vice chancellor? ✏️Any university should strive to become quality education hub at local, national and international level. To achieve this the biggest vision and mission of Vice Chancellor to have best academic and physical resources.Academic resource built confidence among students and community who play vital role in defining university as quality learning hub at national and international level.Given the resources my focus was to address both academic and physical resources through fund generation by main thrust on vibrancy and visibility of university through various steps like cultural and sports.

On A Level Results Day our students spoke to us about the benefits of studying an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) course in the Sixth Form.Students have the opportunity to start the EPQ course in Year 12. Emilie Le Barth, EPQ Coordinator, said: “We are excited to provide such an opportunity for pupils to extend their skill sets, take on an independent challenge, grow their knowledge, and be creative. One of the many benefits of the EPQ is that it is a qualification based on independence; we will actively encourage students to become self-sufficient, an important skill that will be really important for their future in higher education.”Jon Jones, Acting Head of Sixth Form, added: “An EPQ is the equivalent of half an A Level and universities like to see applicants with an EPQ because they have independent study skills that help them succeed at university. Having an EPQ helps students differentiate themselves in the UCAS applications process.Students with an EPQ alongside their three Sixth Form subjects will see a better transition into university. Research states very clearly that students find it easier to progress through their first year at university and they have a better outcome, they are more likely to achieve a First or 2:1 at the end of their university course.”Many of our students also find that the skills they learn from the EPQ course also help them with their Sixth Form subjects. In this video, we hear from George Gibbens about his experience of studying for an EPQ. He's heading to Durham University to read Geography. George plans to go into the Intelligence Services or diplomatic work in the future.Have a fantastic time at Durham University George!Seaford's informal Sixth Form Evening, for entry in September 2024, is on the 12th October 2023. Today is the first day of classes for the Spring Semester at UAlbany. In addition to reconnecting and working with all the students under my guidance, I am equally thrilled to engage in collaborative initiatives with the executive board of the first-gen college student union. Together, our mission is to not only boost attendance in the group but also brainstorm innovative initiatives tailored for the unique needs of University at Albany, SUNY first-generation college students. Now, let me share some other excited news: I've been given the opportunity to present again at both Rowan University's First-Generation Symposium and NACADA Region 1. The title of my presentation, "Impermanence and the First Generation College Student Dilemma," is designed to captivate and spark curiosity. In the realm of academic advising and other higher ed professions, the experience can often feel like navigating through a maze of chaos. However, my presentation aims to flip this narrative by embracing uncertainty and change, particularly in the context of supporting first-gen students who may be silently facing various challenges. As higher education professionals, our role extends beyond mere guidance; it involves gracefully adapting to provide holistic support within the ever-evolving landscape of our students' academic and personal experiences. Central to my presentation is the exploration of the concept of impermanence — the profound idea that everything is in a continuous state of change.I plan on shedding wisdom on the importance of embracing change, fostering personal and academic growth, and ensuring that first-generation college students not only navigate but truly flourish in their educational endeavors.I am excited at the chance to connect with other passionate colleagues at these conferences, sharing insights, and collectively contributing to the uplifting journey of First-Generation College Students. I eagerly anticipate embracing other exciting opportunities that unfold during this spring semester. 🎓✨ #livingthedream #FirstGenLeadership #SpringSemesterExcitement #professionaldevelopment #firstgenerationcollegestudent #MyStory
