11th Annual

March 28, 2014

Dear 2014 SEME Participants,

We are delighted to welcome you to the 11th Annual Sports Events Marketing Experience (SEME).

We are at a critical juncture in the sports industry today, and we feel the role of SEME has never been more valuable for new professionals looking to break into the sports industry. We have been fortunate over the past eleven years to have such an inspiring commitment from our hundreds of executives and sports industry professionals that reside all over the world who take time to serve as speakers and panelists each year.

We have gathered together the industry’s most accomplished executives and enthusiastic personal-ities to offer you an insider’s perspective to this job market and to help you understand and answer the ultimate question, “What Makes Me Marketable?” We are excited that so many of you traveled cross-country to this unique event to experience, listen, and learn from the best.

In the spirit of an interactive learning environment, we have encouraged the presenters to challenge you with real world questions and experiences. Panel discussions, interactive workshops, and break-out sessions will allow you unique one-on-one access to the decision makers of your choice.

We invite each participant to play an active role in the experience by engaging with our panelists by asking thought-provoking questions and by taking advantage of the professional and social networking opportunities planned for you throughout the next two days. This experience should not only enlighten and inspire, but also offer insight into new career opportunities.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Sports Entrepreneurship Association (SEA) students that were instrumental in implementing this educational initiative. Their insight, creativity and long hours helped to make this event possible. We also wish to thank our sponsors, educational advi-sory board and speakers, who provided leadership and direction to our team of future industry leaders

Enjoy the experience!.

Founder & President, Octagon

In 1983, Phil de Picciotto co-founded Advantage International, which became Octagon, and for three decades has helped build it into the global leader in talent representation, property ownership, event management and sports and entertainment marketing.

de Picciotto has also built the brands and managed the careers of many of the world’s most recognizable and talented athletes and celebrities—from Super Bowl champions and Olym-pic gold medalists, to royalty and network broadcasters--and has served as an advisor to government leaders, governing body heads and the CEO’s of some of the world’s leading corporations.

In recognition of his accomplishments, he has received many accolades including Advertis-ing Age’s “The Marketing 100” as one of the world’s top marketing professionals; the Sport-ing News’ “Top 100 Most Powerful People in Sports”; and Sports Business Journal’s “20 Most influential People: Sports Agents” and “Top 50 Most Influential People in Sports Business”.

de Picciotto led the successful effort to remove tobacco sponsorship from professional ten-nis, a move important not only for tennis, which is the most global and largest sports plat-form for women, but for health advocates everywhere. “The fact that our industry plays such a visible and influential role in international diplomacy, economic development and social advancement adds a sense of responsibility to everything we do,” he noted.

In 1987, Buffy Filippell launched a first-of-its-kind business, a retained executive search firm specifically geared towards recruiting middle to senior level executives for sports teams, leagues, associations, arenas, high profile sporting events, corporate sponsors, sports mar-keting agencies and some sporting goods companies. Since then, TeamWork Consulting has been one of the most recognized retained search firms helping to fill over 350 executive po-sitions with a multitude of sports organizations.

Filippell started her career with Wilson Sporting Goods as a National Tennis Promotions As-sistant in Chicago and was promoted to Manager of Racquet Sports and Golf Promotions for Wilson based in London, England and later worked for Mark McCormack’s International Management Group (IMG) as its first female tennis agent. She also served as the Commis-sioner of the Women’s Professional Racquetball Tour.

After returning from a second European stint, this time in Turin, Italy, by January 1985, Filip-pell joined Korn/Ferry International, a worldwide executive recruiting firm. Although she worked on searches for senior executives in banking, manufacturing, insurance and indus-trial products, Filippell brought in and conducted searches for the Women’s Tennis Associa-tion, LPGA, U.S. Cycling Federation, Sporting Goods Manufacturer’s Association, Prince and the Women’s International Pro Tennis Council.

A 1973 graduate of Indiana University, Filippell was awarded a Bachelor’s of Science degree and varsity letter winner in tennis in 1976

Our PartnersEvents DC

Events DC is the face of conventions, sports, entertainment and cultural events within our nation’s capital. As the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia, Events DC leverages the beauty, history and diversity of the most powerful city in the world to attract and promote an ex-tensive variety of events, resulting in amazing experiences for residents and visitors alike, and generating economic and community benefits for the city. Our success comes by focusing on divisions that reflect three lines of business: Conventions and Meetings, Sports and En-tertainment, and Special Events, where we make a range of strategic investments in the region’s marquee sports, enter-tainment and cultural properties. Each division is driven by the desire to bring stellar events to Washington, DC by pro-viding superior customer service to our clients and visitors.

Founded in 1999, TeamWork Online is an online sports and live events job match-making engine that connects 2.2 mil-lion applicants with the right jobs and 750+ employers with the right candidates, 93% of the time in the last year.

We provide an online job application process that networks the employment pages of our member employers. We pro-mote professional “Teammate” networking events and we host an online professional networking registry. We offer premium, insider tools, called “MVP Access” to enhance candidate applications and improve an applicant’s success rate in getting a new job in sports or live events.

Since that time, TeamWork Online provides employers a tal-ent management network, the best and most qualified can-didates interested in sports and live event jobs.
